Finding safe skin care products for acne treatment is not easy. Finding pregnancy safe acne treatments? Nearly impossible. We all know one of the best ways to treat and prevent pregnancy acne is to remove your makeup and wash your face regularly. But not every makeup remover is safe -, especially for pregnant Mamas. So, we’ve rounded up some all-natural, DIY makeup removers to help wipe away the day’s dirt and kick that pregnancy acne’s butt.
Oils
One of the most simple yet effective ways to naturally remove makeup is with oil. Yes it sounds counterintuitive - why would you put oil on your face when an oily face is exactly what you’re trying to avoid? But it actually helps dissolve the excess oil in your pores.
Two popular oil cleansers are castor and olive oil, but sunflower, avocado, safflower, and coconut oils also work just as well. Experiment with different ones and combinations (with your doctor’s permission, of course), to see which one works best for you.
How to use
To use oils as a DIY makeup remover, first massage around a quarter-sized amount of oil on your face for up to two minutes. Place a washcloth soaked in very hot water, wring it out, and place over your face. Leave the washcloth on your face for around a minute. Then, wipe your face with the clean side of the cloth while leaving a thin layer of oil on your face.
As your skin naturally detoxes, you may see an increase in breakouts at first, but once it adjusts it should clear up.
Witch Hazel
With hazel is a great additive to your standard oil cleanser. It’s made from the witch hazel shrub and is an herbal extract or hydrosol. It’s one of the best acne products for pregnancy and helps with dry or itchy skin - a common #pregnancyprob.
How to use
You can use witch hazel by itself or diluted in water (½ witch hazel to ½ water). Soak a small area of a washcloth or clean makeup pad remover in the solution and use in a circular motion to remove makeup. Follow with a pregnancy safe acne treatment like our Rehab Serum skincare for pregnancy acne.
Honey
Honey isn’t just a great addition to your tea, it’s also ah-maz-ing for your skin. The natural antibacterial properties in honey make it a great skin care product for pregnancy acne and also contains enzymes that help clear up dead skin cells.
How to use
To use honey as a DIY makeup remover, rub about a teaspoon of raw honey between your hands then spread it over our face while massaging in circular motions. Let the honey sit for about 5-10 minutes while you scrub away dead skin with our Indulge Sugar Scrub then remove with a warm cloth. And voila - clean skin!
Aloe
There’s more to aloe than just relief for distressed skin or tired, swollen feet. Using aloe vera gel combined with a couple other ingredients on your face removes makeup naturally to help combat acne during pregnancy.
How to use
Combine equal parts aloe vera gel and raw honey in a small container. For every one cup of cleanser, add two tablespoons of your favorite oil to the mixture. With an immersion blender, combine ingredients until it forms a paste. Keep in an airtight container (in the refrigerator if the aloe is fresh and preservative-free). Use a small amount of the cleanser to get rid of makeup and massage it into skin for up to two minutes then rinse with cool water.
DIY Makeup Remover Wipes
If you’re more of a makeup remover wipe kind of Mama, tap into that DIY side and make your own. Some store-bought wipes are not pregnancy safe face products, especially since they can contain harmful toxins and chemicals. So, take matters into your own hands and make ‘em yourself.
How to make
First, you’ll need:
- Cotton rounds
- A small jar with a tight-fitting lid
- 1 tbsp pure aloe vera
- 2 tsp pure witch hazel extract
- 1 tsp liquid castile soap
- 1 tsp fractionated coconut oil (or skin-cleansing oil of your choice)
- 8-12 drops essential oils - like lavender or frankincense
Then, combine everything except the cotton rounds into a jar and shake or use your immersion blender. Stack the cotton rounds into the small jar and gently shake until they are coated with the mixture. Finally, remove that makeup and watch that pregnancy acne fade away!
